Supply Chain Carbon Coalition
Addressing the environmental impact of supply chains is increasingly recognised as one of the core issues for business. The purpose of the Supply Chain Carbon Coalition is help companies move forward with green supply chain initiatives with the confidence that what you're doing is consistent with the industry standards, credible, and can be communicated to partners, suppliers and customers in a way they will understand.
A lower carbon footprint is within reach
The Coalition is a cost-free, voluntary association of the world's leading manufacturers, retailers, logistics companies, freight forwarders, 3PLs, suppliers, government representatives, academics and other relevant parties. The shared ethos of the members of the Coalition is that companies that have a clear goal in mind will achieve more, and that this goal should be shared with its partners and competitors in the industry.
The Coalition provides strength in numbers - the confidence that the environmental initiatives that you are investing in and reporting, and the goals you are committing to publically, have been endorsed and are being used by a large group of similar companies. Essentially, we strive for the 'five C's' of smart carbon management:
credibility, consistency, collaboration, cost savings and communication
Collaboration among the members of the Coalition in an effort to achieve large scale goals quickly and efficiently, making green efforts sustainable through Cost Saving strategies; Consistency of emission factors, metrics and measures so that efforts can be accurately measured and compared; Communally evaluating and encouraging the use of the emission factors, voluntary schemes and reporting methods deemed most appropriate to ensure Credibility; and Communication of these goals and achievements to the industry and the public at large.
An industry standard set by the industry for environmentally responsible supply chain... The united voice you have been waiting for to know how to proceed and what to aim for...
The ability to report your measures and goals are in line with those of a respected group of Fortune 500 companies
The Coalition steering committee will meet for the first time at the 2nd Sustainable Supply Chain Summit in Brussels on 17-18 March 2009. There we will discuss what the agreed goals and practices of any member who wants to be a formal part of the coalition should be. The discussions will be broken into working groups to come to decisions and give guidance on the most issues for the industry.
These groups will be informed by relevant academics and government representatives, but will be industry-led. The feedback from these discussions will be shared with the delegation at large on Day Two of the event, and will be assembled into a Memorandum from the Coalition. Within a set timeframe we aim to gather signatories for the Memorandum and begin to publicize it to the industry, government, investors, etc., and aim to voice it to the US, UK, EU and European National governments, and at events such as Copenhagen 2009, and Kyoto 2012 in subsequent drafts.
With billions of Euros of spend behind the commitments and recommendations in the Memorandum, the industry and individual companies will finally have firm ground to stand on when it comes to greening the supply chain.
Where do I start?
We are currently recruiting companies to be part of the consultation process for the first draft of the Coalition Memorandum. No formal commitment need be made to be part of these discussions, and participation is cost-free.
The discussion starts in Brussels, where the Working Groups and delegation at large meet on 17-18 March as part of the Sustainable Supply Chain Summit. All delegates will be involved in the macro-level debates and relevant industry representatives are invited to take part on the specific working groups. To register for the Summit click here
